Welcome to Year Two
Teacher : Mr Hibbard
Support staff: Mrs Pasarica, Mrs White, Ms Richings, Ms Lam, Mrs Ward, Ms Cahill, Mrs Kumar, Ms Dowdall, Mrs Altayar
Welcome back!
I hope you enjoyed the Easter break, The clocks have “sprung” forward and hopefully we have some sunny weather to look forward to.
Please have a read of the information below; this should give you a brief overview of the topics that we cover. The new class timetable is also on the website. I am very excited for a great summer term filled with a lot of learning and fun!
Homework
Homework will continue to be given out on a Wednesday and collected in on Monday. It will be related to work covered in class and it’s meant as a chance for the children to consolidate their learning. This work is in addition to regular reading at home. Please try to read with your child every day to improve their accuracy and fluency. Maths may also be set online using Sumdog. All the children should have a log-in for this, but please let me know if your child’s gets misplaced.
PE
PE is still on Monday at school and on Thursday we have swimming lessons. For PE your child may come to school dressed in their PE kit. Please make sure that your child’s PE kit / clothing is named. There may be occasions when the children take part in PE outside so you may wish to send in a tracksuit. For our swimming lessons please ensure your child brings their kit with them each week. Swimming kit is a swimming cap (shoulder length or longer hair MUST be tied up), swimming costume (boys = snug fitting / girls = one piece suit) and a towel. Goggles can be worn but are not compulsory. Some children find it easier to come to school with their swimming costume on under their school uniform BUT then please do remember to put underwear into their swimming bag.
Equipment
Please make sure that your child has a named water bottle in school so that they can keep hydrated during the day in the hot summer months. For hygiene reasons, we do not provide cups for the children, and water fountains across school are out of use so it is very important that they have their own water bottle.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to pop in to school to see me,
Thank you,
Mr Hibbard, Mrs Pasarica, Ms Dowdall, Zara and Aiah.
Year 2 Timetable Summer 2026
Phonics and Reading
In Year 2, the children continue to build on the skills they have learnt whilst using the Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) phonics programme in Reception and Year 1.
Children will read individually each week and will be given a phonetically decodable book to read and practise. One the children have completed the ELS scheme, they move on to using the Collins Big Cats reading scheme.
To support their love of reading, children will also be encouraged to choose a 'sharing book' - this is a book that may or may not be fully decodable but can be enjoyed with parents and family members as a book to read together.
